Ali Z.

Senior Shopify Specialist

SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCE

• 3+ years of Shopify development experience with strong focus on D2C ecommerce operations during the last 2 years along with experience gained as a freelance consultant. Currently serving as Sr. Shopify Specialist at Boldcare leading technical operations for multiple brands.

• Specialist in conversion optimisation and analytics implementation, building complete measurement frameworks using GA4, GTM, and custom dashboards whilst improving Core Web Vitals performance for enhanced user experience.

• Proven track record in automation and integration, creating sophisticated order flow systems connecting Shopify with warehouse management and developing API-based solutions for operational efficiency.

👍  What we loved about them

• Migrated Bold Care from WooCommerce to Shopify - coordinated with the designers and the SEO team, improving conversions from 2-3% to 4-5% – he has proven that he can handle major technical transitions. He also tracks technical performance metrics like LCP/FCP and aims for under 2.2 seconds - showing genuine technical performance awareness beyond just conversion rates.

• Natural team player who thinks systemically - during the case study interview, he thought from a team perspective about which teams would need to work on different issues across different months. He tried to be efficient by grouping similar issues across stores while keeping urgency levels in mind. Despite being highly technical, he worked hard to think outside the box and consider broader operational impacts.

• Shows clarity of thought and genuine commitment - evident from his long tenures at each company (3+ years at previous role, nearly a year at current despite challenges), he sees projects through to completion rather than jumping around.

• Takes ownership of unattractive but critical work - he specifically mentions working with customer support because "they're underrated" and need technical help, showing he has genuine empathy and cares about the full customer experience. When discussing complex problems, he said he'd "go back and do it himself" rather than just delegating, which shows real ownership mentality and willingness to get hands dirty.

ℹ️  Things to be aware of

• Strong technical background - Ali can code in multiple languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, Flask) and has built custom apps from scratch, not just drag-and-drop page builders. His CV shows progression from front-end developer to DevOps to Shopify specialist, giving him genuine technical depth that most ecommerce managers lack. He's comfortable with APIs, database management, and version control, which means he can actually implement complex technical solutions rather than just requesting them from developers.

• Hasn't used specific e-commerce tools - Although he lacks hands-on experience with Recharge and Launchpad, he has strong experience with Shopify flows and alternatives like Rebuy and Quickpay (for subscriptions, bundling and payments). For more details on his experience with Shopify Apps, see here.

• Lacks agency experience – He's only managed 2-3 stores at any given point in time, all within the same company ecosystem.

• Notice period and transition challenges - his 2-month notice period combined with heavy company dependency could create complications if you need him to start sooner.

💁‍♀️  Where he may need support

  • Although he lacks extensive experience with LinkedIn and Bing ads, his proficiency in Google ads suggests a high adaptability to new platforms.

👩‍💻  Technical interview performance

Objective

This candidate was invited to a 60-minute follow-up interview to assess their technical capabilities in more detail. During this interview, we assessed their critical-thinking skills, technical expertise, and overall conversational skills.

Technical abilities

• Shopify platform expertise [8/10] – Ali demonstrates strong practical Shopify knowledge that's clearly been applied successfully in a real-world, high-stakes environment. His understanding of discount systems, customer segmentation, and platform capabilities shows solid foundation work that goes beyond theoretical knowledge. The fact that he successfully launched and managed the Bold Care website - which operates in a complex regulatory environment with multiple sales channels and has scaled to 2.5 million customers with $3 million revenue - proves his platform competency extends well beyond basic feature usage into sophisticated ecommerce execution.

• Strategic thinking and problem-solving [8/10] – Ali's case study performance revealed much stronger strategic capabilities than initially apparent in his technical responses. Once he understood the perspective needed for the business scenario, he demonstrated mature strategic thinking by balancing contract values against technical complexity and rationally assessing what problems he could realistically solve. His recognition that Store A would require too much work while Store B's traffic issues needed long-term SEO strategy shows practical prioritisation skills.

• Project management and organisational skills [7/10] – Through the case study, he also showed structured thinking about resource allocation and team coordination, though with some initial uncertainty. He showed us practical project management instincts by allocating specific percentages across stores (30% to Store A, 40% to Store C, 15% each to others) and thinking systematically about which specialist teams should handle different issues. His efficiency mindset of grouping similar problems across stores (recognizing Store A and D both had traffic and conversion issues) shows operational thinking valuable for agency work.

• Customer-centric thinking and conversion psychology [8/10] – Ali exhibited a strong understanding of conversion psychology through specific, detailed examples. His supplement marketing strategy showed deep grasp of customer decision-making - prioritising social proof with prominent ratings and review counts, featuring top benefits with icons in the first fold, and understanding that 90% of customer queries should be answered immediately upon page load. His candy checkout analogy demonstrated genuine insight into impulse purchase psychology, and his subscription strategies went beyond simple discounting to include value-added services like doctor consultations, showing he understands complex customer motivations.

Areas of growth

• We felt he could work on improving his understanding of sample sizes and statistical significance when designing A/B testing experiments. When asked about this directly, he said he runs several experiments and likes to test multiple hypotheses but typically relies on what the platform tells him and makes decisions accordingly.
